Mt. Vernon Bridge Replacement Project
Hits Key Milestone

Earlier this month, the final of nine steel girders were lifted into place, completing the span of the Mt. Vernon Bridge. This reflects a significant milestone in the replacement of the bridge that was originally built in 1934 and has been closed since December 2020.

The nine girders are 182 feet long, weigh 250,000 pounds each, and are the longest pre-cast girders made for a bridge in California. They were delivered from Northern California via special trucks accompanied by a California Highway Patrol escort.

A total of 53 girders between 90 and 182 feet long were used to complete the quarter mile long span, which passes over 22 active rail lines.

The project is a partnership between the San Bernardino County Transportation Agency (SBCTA), the City of San Bernardino, and Caltrans.

The $245 million bridge replacement is expected to be completed by summer, 2025. The project has seen multiple delays due to access issues in conjunction with railroad operations.
